INSIDE THE CUP
With Seumas McAlpine
Written 28-10-10

Well we’ve reached the business end of the Australian Cup and it’s down to a battle between the A Leaguers and the boys from Division 2.

The Cup so far has been a great spectacle and has produced numerous upsets, none bigger then Division 4 outfit, All Stars Soccer’s come from behind win over A League title challengers and ROW League Semi Finalists Granado FC, but we are down to eight and I will preview each game and give you my tips on who will come out on top.

Victoria Utd (2.3) vs. Bora Juniors (1.1)

These two sides are filled with history, both having competed in the A League as well as having been deep into the cup previously.

The both also have a deep history against each other with 14 prior encounters in official matches. Bora hold a clear lead over Victoria on the head to head basis with 8 wins and 4 draws, but the notable fact is that the last time these two sides met, last season, Victoria won 4-0.

THE ROAD SO FAR:

Victoria Utd: Victoria has had a reasonable draw through to the quarters, their toughest test coming against A League side ‘The Snakes’ who they fought off with a 2-1 win. Although having a relatively easy draw, they did have a small hiccup which they overcame. Their 5th Round encounter with Division 3 side ddr ended 2-2 and was forced to penalties, where they won 5-3. The highlight, a smashing 10-0 win over Division 5 side, Newcastle United Jets in Round 4.

Bora Jnrs: Bora like Victoria have had a decent cup run, playing two Division 4 sides, and a Division 5 side in their 6 matches to date. Tough games against Division 2 side and former A Leaguer DynoTiger FC and Current A League side Arsenal F.C. have helped them fine tune for the latter stages.

THE KEY MEN:

Victoria Utd: Abdo Trigo, The Brazilian playmaker has been in fine form for the Big V this season, not only setting up goals but scoring them as well. Since arriving at the MCG last season he has scored an amazing 30 goals in 45 games and his attack along with his experience has proven a key to Victoria’s form.

Bora Jnrs:  Ed Eyre, Like Abdo, Eyre has been a key man for the Crafty Butchers. He provides very good service to the likes of Rawlings, and also knows where the back of the net is. He’s probably not as important as Abdo but chances are whoever performs the best will likely get the prize.

WHERE IT WILL BE WON:

This game will come down to defence. Although their league form hasn’t been great, Bora’s defence in the Cup thus far has been superb. They have only conceded the 1 goal, a Penalty, against Mighty Madrid FC in Round 4.

Victoria on the other hand have conceded 4 goals in their cup run, but have had a superb league defence and whoever comes out on top in this battle will go along way to winning this game.

MY TIP:

It’s a tough one, but I think I’m going to go for an upset here and tip Victoria to win. I can see a MOM performance from Abdo helping the Big V to the Semi finals for the first time.

Victoria 2-1

Collingwood FC (1.1) vs. Guards FC (1.1)

Without doubt the Match of the Round. Once fierce rivals, now strong Allies with Guards joining the LA. One thing is for sure here though; once the whistle is blown there will be no holding back.

Both these sides have everything, experience on the biggest stages, both in Australia and ROW, and so far this season they have been neck and neck.

Collingwood has a slight 1 point advantage over Guards on the A League table, but in both meetings neither side has been able to gain the advantage.

Another factor is both know what its like to go a long way in the cup and fall short, Collingwood making the Final in season 13 only to be beaten by Harry Cool, whilst Guards has made the Final twice, in season 8 beaten by Dangerous Alliance and last season, beaten by Harry Cool.

THE ROAD SO FAR:

Collingwood FC: Collingwood has had a tough run through the early rounds, facing Lactics and Beast County (Both ‘A’ League) as well as S.S.A Polonia (Div 2). Impressively though they have dominated all games except for the Lactics game which they were made to fight all the way.

They have had no issues with finding the back of the net either, 19 goals in 6 matches will have Guards boss Richie Pell worried.

Guards FC:  Like Collingwood, Guards has not had and easy run. They have had to overcome Memphistopheles, and The Gladstone Granites (Both ‘A’ League) as well as West Sydney Slammers, Icehole FC, and Ansur Villa (All Div 2). They two have done so impressively, the only nervy moment, was going down 1-0 to Memphis before fighting back to win 2-1.
The have also had no issues finding the back of the net, 17 goals in 6 games, whilst also only conceding just the 1 goal.

THE KEY MEN:

Collingwood FC: Mark ‘Forever’ Young: The Key man for the Magpies is without doubt Mark ‘Forever’ Young. He is a rock at the back and although his rating doesn’t tell the story, without him the Magpies defence looks shaky without him.

His leadership is also very important to the Magpies side.

Guards FC:  Miguel ‘Magic’ Lavado: Its tough to pick a key man from the Guards outfit, but a lot will focus on Attacking Midfielder Manuel ‘Magic’ Lavado. His ability to create opportunities for Riley and Peden will pose a threat to the Magpies defence for the full 90 minutes. He can be deadly from the dead ball as well.

WHERE IT WILL BE WON:

Pressure, both these sides have had chances in the past to win titles and have floundered. They know that this is their best chance to get some silverware and whoever handles that pressure the best will come out on top.

MY TIP:

Nothing has separated these teams so far this season and I’m predicting the same again here. This could go the full 120 and to the penalty spot. Who will come out on top McCaw or Lind?

Collingwood 1-1 (6-5 after Penalties)

Zootsuit (2.2) vs. Watson’s Stingrays (1.1)

Another intriguing matchup which sees division 2 outfit Zootsuit face up to A League side Watson’s Stingrays. Zootzuit are not only attempting to make their first ever Cup Semi Final, but also fighting for a chance at promotion to the A League for the first time.

The Stingrays know how to win Cup Quarter Finals, having been here and won on two previous occasions.

Interestingly these two sides have only met on one previous occasion, which was in the cup back in season 16. Zootsuit powering over Watson’s on that occasion with a 3-0 win.

THE ROAD SO FAR:

Zootsuit: Although not having a tough cup run, Zooter’s have had a couple of tricky matches. A Round 6 win over managerless Melbourne Supremacy  and a Round 8 win over Seven Deadly Sins FC highlight their performances. A 6-1 win over fellow division 2 side Ayers Rock shows they know how to score.

Watson’s Stingrays:  The Stingrays have had a pretty comfortable run through the cup up until the last round when they faced former cup champions Alcoholic’s Utd. Despite falling behind they fought back and won a thriller on Penalties.

Scoring has not been a problem for the Stingrays, hitting the back of the net 16 times in their 6 rounds to date.

THE KEY MEN:

Zootsuit: Bo Johansen: The key man for the Zooter’s will be new Keeper Bo Johansen. In only his 7th start for the club, Bo will have to withstand a barrage from the Stingrays potentially lethal attack. His performance could determine the outcome of this game.

Watson’s Stingrays:  Marijo Rakic: Surprisingly once again I’m picking another new guy as a Key man. Since his arrival at Stingray Park the big Serbian defender has added stability and experience to a somewhat fragile Stinger’s defence. His combination with Bing and Didak has been very good and once again he will need to step up for the Stingers.

WHERE IT WILL BE WON:

The Zooter’s defence holds the key for me. With the likes of Southall, McDonald, Wood and Hammermuller, the Stinger’s boast plenty of awesome options who know how to hit the back of the net. If the Zooter’s can’t contain these players, Wato’s boys could be on their way to another Cup Semi Final

MY TIP:

I can’t see anything other then a Stingrays win here. Zootsuit are probably the weakest side of the last 8, and if the can pull off an upset here then they should be extremely happy with themselves.

Watson’s Stingrays 3-1

Sydney (2.1) vs. Nedved FC (2.1)

This all division 2.1 clash promises to be an absolutely cracking game. They sit atop the 2.1 table, both fighting to win the league with 3 games to go.

Interestingly Nedved are above Sydney on the table, but they have never beaten in three previous attempts and will need to turn it around fast if they are to progress further.

Both sides have equalled their best performance in a cup having both made the Quarter Finals once (Sydney S16, Nedved S20). It could well be that the winner of this match will miss out on the 2.1 League title, so the pressure will be on.

THE ROAD SO FAR:

Sydney: Sydney has had a pretty easy run thus far having played 2 ‘b’ teams (Gladstone Granites and Guards). Their toughest opponents have been Tazza’s Titans FC (2-0) and Geelong Falcons (2-1). Sydney have scored 19 goals thus far, including an 8 goal haul in Round 3 against the Granite Reserves.

Nedved FC:  If you thought Sydney’s run so far has been easy, then Nedved’s has been a walk in the park. Nedved’s toughest encounter was a round 7 matchup against former Cup Runners up Chemango, although they are a shadow of the side that were once in the A League. Nedved has scored 24 goals in their 8 games and only conceded the 2 against All Stars Soccer in the last round.

THE KEY MEN:

Sydney: Fred Austen: This man has been the thorn in the side of many teams over the years and if he has a good day then Nedved can kiss his hopes goodbye. Twelves MOM’s, and only let in 16 goals from 31 appearances show his class.

Nedved FC: Giovanni Howard: Injuries up front have cruelled Nedved’s chances and Howard will have to assume a more attacking role then he has this season. He definitely has the ability, but will playing out of position hurt his style. How he adapts will decide Nedved's fate.

WHERE IT WILL BE WON:

Simple really, the Battle between Nedved’s injured attack and Sydney’s defence, led by Austen will tell the tale in this match.

Apart from Austen, Sydney boasts one of Australia’s most experienced defenders in Mark ‘Angry’ Southall; Nedved will need to break them down early.

MY TIP:

Unfortunately I feel that injuries have cruelled any realistic chance Nedved had of matching Sydney. The loss of Panduru and Allen will force Sir Pavel to try something different. Nedved will need to win the battle of the midfield to give them any hope.

Sydney 2-0

We are in for an exciting end to the Australia Cup. Without doubt the favourite for the cup will be the Winner of the Collingwood-Guards clash but as we’ve seen so far this season and many times in the past, in the cup, ANYTHING CAN HAPPEN!!!

32 Clubs Left
Written 21-10-10

So who is left?  Here are the stats:

-          11 Division 1 clubs

-          11 Division 2 clubs

-          7 Division 3 clubs

-          2 Division 4 clubs

Major Match Previews:

Guards FC Reserves (4.3 div) vs Sydney (2.1 Div)

Both teams sit in top three positions of their respective groups, both have form coming into this match.  Guards Reserves has had a relatively easy run into round 7.  In their five matches, they have only played two division 3 sides and three fellow division 4 sides.  Two of Guards’ matches have finished with penalty shootouts, with Guards not missing a beat, scoring from all shots taken.  It is needless to say that Lukas Fair will have a big day ahead of him.  Will he stand up?

Sydney has breezed through their four matches.  They have had a tougher run, but this hasn’t haltered them in any way.  Starting off with an eight-nil thrashing of The Granite Reserves, Sydney looked confident.  Their goal difference through these four matches has been +15.  Striker, Pavel Kaštánek, is due for a big game, and this could be his chance.  In the week Sydney outlined that the Cup is not a major issue for his club; “Have made some changes bringing in a couple more fringe youth players, not too fussed with the cup so no worries if I go out on this one.”

TIP: Sydney 3-0
Actual Result: Sydney 1-0

Zootsuit (2.2 div) vs Tottenham XI (3.2 div)

Tottenham XI has a really strong chance to upset Zootsuit here.  Zootsuit are without six of their starting XI, and they are going to be stretched.  Zootsuit haven’t had an easy run, drawing three division 2 sides in their four matches.  A 6-1 thrashing of Ayers Rock proved that Zootsuit are the real deal, but will injury and suspension hurt them?

Tottenham XI has had a horror season in 3.2.  They have rightly been labelled as chokers by a number of clubs.  They actually have a reasonably strong squad, but it lacks in depth.  Write off Tottenham XI at your own peril, they are a very strong side when everything comes together.  But unfortunately, everything is not coming together as much as manager, Harry Redknapp, would like.  Yes, they are probably going to get relegated and absolutely dominate division 4 in S22, but they are going to inflict more than a few headaches upon opposition managers before season end both in the group and in the Cup.

We approached Tottenham XI manager, Harry Redknapp, and asked him about his horror season;

TM Australia: Could a win in the Cup today wake up your side, and give you a chance to stay in division 3?
Harry Redknapp: I thought I had woken up from my slumber in the last 5 games or so just leaving my run very late.

TM A: Simple one, can you win today?
HR: Don't think I will win, but if it’s tight at the end maybe very slight chance to nick it.  If I win this game no chance the next game unless I draw a Div 3 side.

TIP: Tottenham XI 1-0
Actual Result: Zootsuit 2-1

WacaGround FC (3.2 Div) vs Bora Juniors (1 div)

WacaGround FC have been pretty solid in the Cup in recent seasons, this season is no exception.  Waca comes into this match with a near full-strength side.  They currently sit 4th in 3.2 but stumbled on Wednesday with a loss against The Killers F.C.  They are yet to be challenged in the Cup and Bora will certainly do this.  Robins and Ottens hold the key.

Bora Juniors are currently sitting in 12th place in the A-League.  They may not be the hardest division 1 match-up, buy they come into the game full-strength.  They were tested last Thursday by DynoTiger FC, but still managed to come away with the win.  Both sides are predicted to come out with a somewhat defensive mentality, meaning goals will be hard to come by.

TIP: Bora Juniors 1-0
Actual Result: Bora Juniors 1-0

Memphistopheles FC (1 Div) vs Guards FC (1 div)

Guards have a tough encounter against Memphis, and this will be a game to watch.  Memphistopheles were made to fight against a gallant Pigeons FC one week ago.  They have a full-strength side and Dumitru Radulescu will be looking to leave the club on a high.  Tony Warren is in national team contention and will be looking for a good match to cap of a solid season.  Memphis is currently sitting on 15th place in the A-League and winning the cup would be a reason to celebrate the season.  They were runners up back in Season 19, so they certainly know how to switch it on.

Guards FC are yet to concede a goal in their Cup campaign, and are yet to be challenged.  Guards will have to decide what takes importance and how hard he will fight for the Cup this season.  He is currently 4th place on the A-League ladder, so will have fingers crossed that no injuries or suspensions result from tonight’s match.

We approached Guard FC manager, Richie Pell, last night;

TM Australia: The battle for the A-League is heating up, just as the Cup is starting to get interesting, which takes priority for you at this stage?  And are you going to rest players?
Richie Pell: At this stage we will attack both with a full head of steam. We are 7 points behind in the League and almost assured of a ROW spot so at this stage we will not be resting players.

TM A: Let’s say you were to win this match...
RP: If we were to make it through this round, and games in the league went our way, we would have no hesitation in resting players from the cup and to attack the league.  But realistically, we think the league is all but gone.

TM A: Memphistopheles FC are near the bottom of the ladder, do teams play differently in the cup?
RP: Of course, but in saying that all teams have different priorities.  In the past there have been teams who were happy to sacrifice their spot in the A League for a shot at winning the cup.  Personally I don’t think Memphis is one of those people, I don’t think he wants to get relegated and that leads me to believe he will rest a few tonight.

TM A: So an easy match...
RP: No, I don’t expect it to be an easy match whatsoever. We want to keep our 100% record against them intact.

TIP: Guards FC 2-1
Actual Result: Guards FC 3-1

Kuumonica (1 div) vs Jim Utd (3.2 div)

This will be a good match.  Kuumonica currently sit 2nd bottom on the A-League ladder, so this is all they have to play for.  Cup glory will make up for the lost cause that is the A-League.  Kuumonica is crippling in debt and it is rubbing off on their on-field performances.  Nick Linto is in need of a big match.

Jim Utd sits in 2nd place in group 3.2.  They have a very strong squad, but are prone to stumble when the going gets tough.  They are very strong all round the ground and it is hard to pick a fault in the side.  Jim Utd will not only challenge Kuu tonight, but are a good chance to fly the flag for division 3 in this season’s cup.  Start of season recruit, Erik Pijlman, will have his work cut out, trying to stop the forwards and offensive midfielders that Kuumonica bases his team around.

TIP: Jim Utd 3-1
Actual Result: Jim Utd 1-0

Harry Cool (1 div) vs Alcoholics Utd (1 div)

“The Clash of the Titans” This is the second all A-League clash in the Cup this round.  And what a clash it is set to be; 1st on the A-League ladder versus 5th.  Harry Cool completed the double (winning both the A-League and Australian Cup) last season, and is a strong chance to repeat this feat in season 21.  Harry is likely to put a full-strength side into this match, as is Alcoholics Utd.  Robert Eckenfelder has a chance to dominate this match, after scoring a hat-trick in the 14-0 domination of Aussie Arsenal FC last Thursday.

Alcoholics Utd know how play in the Australian Cup.  They have won it twice (S11 & S16) and finished runner up on two occasions (S6 & S14), of which both were against DA.  They are yet to concede a goal in this season’s Cup campaign.  On Monday, they beat Dangerous Alliance Jedi Academy 2-0.  This is their first big match and Chuck Farmer will have his work cut out for him.

TIP: Harry Cool 2-0
Actual Result: Alcoholics Utd 4-0

Collingwood FC (1 div) vs S.S.A Polonia (2.2 div)

Collingwood FC have the far superior side, but S.S.A Polonia are not to be written off.  Injury and suspension has being hurting these two sides and both are unable to put their best XI on the pitch.  Chris Dawson and Brian Wynn are two players who will miss out through suspension.  Both are key position players.  Mark Young will need to stand up tonight, and stop the S.S.A forwards breaking through.  He hasn’t had the best of seasons so far, and this is his chance to stand up.  Collingwood have had a horror draw in the Cup this season, already playing two A-League sides.

S.S.A Polonia is currently sitting 2nd in group 2.2, a remarkable 16 point off leader Dingley Village FC™.  They have looked slightly shaky in their Cup campaign so far, struggling against poor quality opposition.  They are going to struggle against a Collingwood line-up who will be playing in front of their vocal, passionate fans.  Don’t be surprised to see players go down with “suspect” injuries, in a bid to have an early shower and wash the spit out of their hair.  The trip to The Nest may be an unsuccessful one for S.S.A.

TIP: Collingwood FC 4-0
Actual Result: Collingwood FC 3-0
