The Guv's Thoughts
Written 23-10-10

Hello gentleman, my name is the Guv, and I have decided to enlighten you on what is going on in Div 2. In the coming weeks, I will give you my opinion on everything from teams that will win, to those who wasted their money on crap signings and the like.

Let’s start off with 2.1, the strongest group in Div 2

There are four teams vying for the top two spots, and I believe that Nedved is the favourite to gain automatic promotion to the big boys next season. My only concern here is his squad, it is very thin and he cannot afford any injuries from now on.  With a little bit of luck on the cards count, he should be fine.

That leaves Sydney, DynoTiger and Humdinger challenging for that playoff spot.

I would have usually said that Humdinger will claim this spot comfortably, but will keeper, Southall, is in their line up he doesn’t have a chance. Humdinger will wait for the NT sales and buy himself a decent keeper. This will leave him 4th.

Sydney has Austen, and while he is there, this team will always challenge.  I am tipping them to fall agonizingly short and finish 3rd, goal difference being the deciding factor.

This leaves DynoTiger to finish 2nd. It has been a dramatic turnaround for this outfit; they were almost relegated last season. They have rebounded and built a very strong squad, they now have good depth and this should see them sneak into 2nd.

On the relegation bound teams, the bottom four are certainly gone. The only shame here is that board at Futbol Club Barca didn't free up some money earlier as they have a decent squad now strong enough to stay in Div 2.

Group 2.2, and what a domination it has turned out to be...

This group is being absolutely dominated by the Bankers from Dingley Village. After tasting A-League last season the Bankers will go straight back up and try to stay their this time. Manager, Nez Daou, has built an extremely strong squad and is only short of a keeper, then they will be challenging the big boys week in week out.

This leaves SSA Polonia, IceHole, and Zootsuit looking to challenge for that single playoff spot.  To be perfectly honest, I have no idea how IceHole FC are up there and actually challenging with a chance at taking an A-League position. They have a good keeper, two decent midfielders and two decent forwards, after this they have nothing. The manager here is doing an amazing job with the talent available, well done lad, but IceHole FC will not advance, not this season anyway...

Having said all of this, I am left with SSA and Zootsuit to the challengers for 2nd. Zootsuit has had a good season but will fall short; they need a season or two to strengthen their squad so that they could contend with the big boys. Good luck to you, SSA; with a good squad you certainly deserve your shot in the A-League playoff.

The relegation spots in this division are already settled, it is pretty clear. I wish (some of) them a speedy return.

Group 2.3, without doubt the weakest group of Division 2

The top two spots here will be battled out by three teams; Subiaco Sorcerers, Victoria Utd and Geelong Falcons.  My tip is for the positions to remain the same until the end of the season. The Sorcerers have had a good season and will finish on top, but they will need to imply some magic upon the transfer market before next season starts, or it will be a very long season 22 for them with minimal success.

Victoria Utd has had a brief taste of the A-League just a few seasons ago and will look to reacquaint themselves at the big boys table next season. They have a few injury concerns but should be able to withhold a strong finishing Geelong Falcons, who like their cousins in the AFL, have had a decent season, but may have left their run a fraction too late.

As for the relegation battle, any team from 9th down could still get relegated. I am hoping that Pepe, Strikers, Somerville, and Regecide survive, as they have decent squads compared to the others around them. To be honest, I have no idea how some of the other teams have won a game, unless when playing against each other...

Thought of the Week

Have a good look at the transfer market now, there are plenty of bargains out there while clubs are trying to cash up before NT sales.
