Round 1 - Might&Power FC (3.2)

Picture
In their return to division 3, Might&PowerFC (M&P) had the tough task of Pompey first up.  The away game against opposition of this calibre looked ominous.  It was a slow start to the game, 0-0 at half time.  Pompey had taken 3 shots on goal, but were unable to get them on target, M&P had 5 attempts, including 3 on target.

M&P would have got to half time satisfied, with a draw worth a win.  Most teams would have played it easy and took the one point, but not this team.  55 minutes had been surpassed when G. Breznik put M&P 1-0 up with a simple tap in.  One minute later, N. Doust, levelled the scores.  10 minutes later C. Geogan found the back of the net with his head, finishing off some great work from his teammate McKay.  This put M&P 2-1 up with a third of the match to play.  M&P held on for victory, despite some wonderful efforts from Pompey’s Nick Aubrey.  At just 20 years of age, George McKay won the match for his side.  He is certainly a player of the future, and M&P are certainly a team of the future.

So it was a successful start to the season by M&P.  The match was also M&P’s first win against Pompey in the fifth attempt.  It was certainly an upset win, and M&P fully deserve the points and the honour of receiving TM Australia’s TEAM of the ROUND.

Round 2 - Faulconbridge Rovers (2.2)

Picture
After the Round One domination of IceHole FC (6 - 1), Faulconbridge Rovers travelled to play A-League ‘relegatee’ Jmaerson FC.  The sides were fairly evenly matched, with both sides having the luxury of a world-class keeper.  The pressure was on Rovers keeper, Eddie Woewodin, after he was named as a future NT player during the lead up.  He was tested within the first minute, with Jmaerson’s Paul Focroft shooting on target.  Just a minute later, the ball was in the net at the other end of the field.  It was Nigerian striker, Ohon Kanda, who found the back of the net from long range after a blistering strike.  Both teams wondered off with the score at 1-0 for their half-time address.

The Rovers piled on the pressure in the second half, making the Jmaerson line up look second-rate.  Caleb Pickett put his side 2-0 up after the through ball from M. Syred gave Pickett a good opportunity from the distance, which he hammered home with a clean volley giving N. McCann no chance whatsoever.  Poul Roslev snuck one back only two minutes later with a powerful header.  The game was sealed in the 84th minute after Caleb Pickett scored his second of the night and fourth of the season.  Tony Solomon took home the Man of the Match award after dominating the left wing all night.

So the Faulconbridge Rovers are off to a flying start, winning both matches and having a goal difference of 7.  Other clubs from 2.2 will have to pay the Rovers a little more respect, otherwise they are going to climb out of reach.  Watch out A-League, cause these guys are the real deal.  The Rovers are most deserving of receiving TM Australia’s TEAM of the ROUND.

Round 3 - Tottenham XI (4.4)

Picture
After the disappointment of relegating from division 3 last season, Tottenham has started well.  They are a team who should not be in division 4, and certainly deserve promotion this time round.  After a win and a draw from their opening games, Tottenham hosted Mighty Lions FC at home.  Tottenham are certainly the better team on paper, and they were certainly the best team on the field that day.  Tottenham raced away in the opening half, scoring three unanswered goals.  But with goals came cards, four yellows by half time had the manager, Harry Redknapp, worried.

In the second half they toned down the onslaught, knowing that the game was in the bag.  No yellow cards for Tottenham in the second half.  They continuously gave the Lions defence something to do, having 18 shots on target, 10 of which worrying the keeper.  The final score line read 4-0 and Tottenham took the 3 points gracefully.  Winger, Elias Chanachi, took home the man of the match award after numerous crosses and set pieces setting up the match for Tottenham.  He scored once and set up two others.

Tottenham are certainties to promote, after some unlucky seasons gone by.  They will absolutely dominate this group, and are going to put up a good fight in division 3 next season.  It may not have been the greatest achievement to win this match, but it was the way that they went about it, with excellent managerial skills that they received TM Australia’s TEAM of the ROUND for round 3.

Round 4 - Victoria Utd (1.1)

Picture
Victoria Utd was predicted by many to be relegated from the A-League immediately after returning.  After consecutive losses in the first two rounds, Victoria got their campaign under way with a win against Narre Heart on Sunday.  Round 4 was going to be a challenge, and the result would indicate how they are playing and how their season is going to pan out.  Memphistopheles FC was the challenger.

Nate Neil got Victoria underway in the opening minutes of the match after a good pass in by Sean Southall.  Moments later the same man set up David Escalada, scoring his 50th goal for the Vics since coming to the club back in season 18.  A half time the score line read: 2 – 0.  It was a score line that was slightly harsh on Memph, as it was a fairly even first half.

Vinnie "The Gun" Young scored his second goal of the season, finishing off a poor through ball.  Sean Southall twisted his knee after 70 minutes had being played.  He had played well up until this unfortunate incident; Memph might have thought that this could be the break that they were waiting for.  They couldn’t have been more wrong, Nate Neil kicked two goals shortly later, finishing off his hat-trick and magnificent individual performance.  Michael Scarrott scored a consolation goal just moments later, but the match was already gone.

Accuracy and Nate Neil won Victoria Utd the match, and they will need to pull out more performances like this if they are to survive the cut this season.  Victoria faces an uphill challenge next week against Guards FC on Friday.  They played very well in round four, and they are certainly worthy deservers of TM Australia’s TEAM of the ROUND.
