A Fresh and 'Herby' Look at Division Four
Written 22-10-10

TM Australia is proud to announce another new expert reporter to the team; ex Australian Middle Distance Runner, Herb Elliot.  He has thrown away the running shoes and unearthed the typewriter.  Stuff the four-minute mile, 4th division of Australia is his task.  Don't be fooled, this guy knows his stuff.  Herb will be giving updates, news and reviews every few weeks.

Welcome to the first general article for Division 4, I will be starting off with “Promotion”.  This is a general overview of all groups (this being Part 1, for part 2, scroll down) and the promotion hopefuls within.  Enjoy.

Division 4 – Promotion (Part 1 = 4.1 – 4.12)

Who are the hot favourites? Find out here, as Herb Elliot gives you the insight into the interesting, and sometimes frustrating, division 4.

4.1 – The Quiet Group, Staring Harry’s Heroes
We start off with your typical Division 4 group.  Quiet and unknown...

The star of the group Harry’s Heroes (Former Div 3) is leading the group with ease.  7 Points ahead of second placed (Melbourne Victory); these teams will be heading back to Div 3 by the end of the season. New keeper, Brian Robbins, will surely be the help that the Heroes have needed for some time. With former GTU forward, Mike Riewoldt, helping to boost the teams scoring chances.  Maybe next season Division 3 will be a bit easier for the side. Second placed Melbourne Victory is 9 points (3 wins) ahead of 3rd place and is looking comfortable at promoting also. Melbourne too has a strong keeper in Martin Alford, who has been with the club since being promoted from the YA (Season 13). Division 3 will be a welcoming challenge for the 2 clubs.

My Tip: These two teams should certainly promote, with Harry’s Heroes having the better team I think they will succeed more in Division 3, while Melbourne does have some excellent youth coming through I think they will struggle until these youth gain more experience.

4.2 – The Less Quiet Group, Staring Former Division 3 Teams

Again, there is not much excitement to be had here. Clumsydogs FC and The Kings Home are safe at promotion, and will indeed be heading back to Division 3, after both teams were relegated from there a season ago. Already you notice a pattern. A star keeper and a good forward will get you too Division 3, staying there is the trick... Both teams failing to do this, next season will be the challenge. Clumsydogs have an all round good team, minus a weak looking defence. Age is also the key, with most of their top players being 28+. A few youth pulls will be a key factor for the side. The Kings Home will surely be back in Division 4 in a couple of seasons, unless they change their team greatly. 4.2 is not such a hard group to promote from.

4.3 – B-Teams, can be a B!tch
... all you need is a 100k ASI Keeper

Sometimes having B-teams in your group can be really unfair. This group shows you why. Concord Quokkas (Former Div 3), lead the group so far, ahead of second place by about three wins (8 Points). With a total of 18 points up for grabs, you would assume the team is looking safe for first. Second place is where the interest lies, and the fact about B-teams. Four teams are heating things up for 2nd, with another three being outside chances. Currently in 2nd and 3rd are A-League’s B-Teams; Juvenis Ex Abyssus (Memphistopheles FC) and Guards FC Reserves (Guards FC). They sit just a single point from each other; it will be a battle to remember for these youngsters, who hope for the A-League dream one day. Let’s not forgot why they’re doing so well, Brian Young (70,399ASI) and Lukas Fair (125,666ASI) are the star keepers for these two sides. With keepers like these Division 4 teams will struggle to make promotion any day of the year, but maybe not? River rats currently sit 4th and are less then a win away from hitting 2nd place, with Barrows Bluemoons sitting 5th only two wins away from 2nd, these two teams aren’t backing down and surely have a shot at promotion this season. River rats looking the team too do it, as Barrows Bluemoons looks a bit undeveloped to hit promotion just yet.

My Tip: Concord Quokkas look to be set for first. Barrows Bluemoons are on a charge of late, but I don’t think it will be enough. Juvenis Ex Abyssus have suffered a lot of injures and red cards here, which I think will give Guards FC Reserves the edge on finishing second.

4.4 – I went to the fridge to have another beer, after finishing 28 I was prepared for Division 3

Yes I am talking about Beergod, over the last few months the man has made a true name for himself over the forums, and will be surely heading to Division 3 next season. An excellent season for the team, and with no injuries or suspensions, they are looking the favourites. Second spot looks to be a battle between Melbourne Ferrets and Windaroo who have a 3 point difference between them. There is two teams below them being 6 points behind (The Underclass Heroes, RozeHell Devils), but without any luck they wont be making promotion.

My Tip: Beergod is looking the good here, but is definitely not safe. Melbourne and Windaroo could easily take their promotion dreams away. But with no injuries and a skilled manager, it doesn’t look the case here. Melbourne has a very, very strong team. I can’t understand why they’re not first. They have the potential, but at the same time you need a skilled manager. Melbourne should be set for second here.

4.5 – One of those Annoying Situations
Where everyone is unknown, quiet, and a banned team is sitting in first place. Enough said.

4.6 – All out war, one of the good Division 4 groups

This is a group to be proud of, a real challenge here. 10 points is the difference between 2nd and 11th. Vermont United is the break away sitting on 62 points in first, 14 points ahead of the pack. Their promotion is already sealed. The rest of the managers will be biting their nails, as promotion will not be easy. Let’s get rid of some teams first though. 10 points behind of second and 6 games left seems pretty unlikely on promotion. So that cuts it back to nine teams. Even being two wins behind here, will need some luck. So let’s cut it back to six teams (2nd – 7th), with the lower three teams being an outside chance. So who looks to get second? Anfield Legends FC is sitting in second, about a win ahead. So they have the advantage here, or do they? Their star keeper is injured for another game which will surely hurt the side, but their next match is against 18th place which is a relief for the side. Junkz hasn’t been active in months and is surely to be deleted, how they ever got to 3rd will be a mystery for all. Tyneside United has won their last five games and is on the rise, but is it too late?? SP 40’s are also looking sharp, so who will take 2nd?

My Tip: Vermont United has already got 1st, but 2nd is the challenge here. Out of the six teams who have a good shot, it should come down to just three. SP 40’s look the weak link to just miss out this time, while Anfield Legends next few games will be vital. They should finish 2nd, but if any mistakes are made, Tyneside United will eat them up and steal 2nd away from them.

4.7 – Just another group, with 7DS taking up 50% of press announcement comments

Although there isn’t much competition to be had here, this little group is still giving it there all. With SDS warming the forum up a bit, the managers have a nice little thing going here. But who is to leave this little group? And who is to stay? Nibbles United is sitting 10 points ahead of 3rd, with nice form and a full squad they should maintain top spot. Burnley Nil is in 3rd, and is two wins off KURDS ALIVE who is 2nd. Getting promotion won’t be an easy task for Burnley. Six matches left, two wins down. Although last five games played Burnley has won them all, in fact they haven’t lost a game in 14 rounds. Compare that to Kurds, who has won only the one game from the last five matches, and Burnley is looking terrific for promotion.

My Tip: Nibbles United, will surely earn promotion, and top spot. Burnley Nil has turned up the boosters the last half of this season, and it will surely earn them promotion.

4.8 – It’s quiet….
Too quiet

This group has a pretty good challenge going for promotion; however there’s just no activity. Check it out if you want to see for yourselves by clicking on the 4.8 above...

4.9 – Former Division 3 teams usually challenge for promotion
… not in this case.

Both former Div 3 sides are looking at relegation in fact. So where does that leave us? There’s only three teams here going for promotion. Hawthorn United is looking strong and will stay first, a well deserved effort. Caleb182 sits 3rd and hasn’t been active since July, so I guess that leaves Spursoz who is currently 2nd, to take promotion. Paul Murphy is an excellent keeper for the side, and will surely like Division 3 before he hits retirement.

4.10 – Another Quiet group
… yes this happens a lot in Division 4...

4.11 – Oh hey, this is how former Div.3 teams should play
...  oh wait, one of them is banned! I guess not.

A fairly easy group this one is, Loads of B-teams in it. Two teams are banned and the previous Div 5 teams are sitting up high! Schmanglers and WFFC should promote here without much of a challenge.

4.12 – It’s a real shame to see so many quiet Division 4 groups

Not much to say here more banned teams, more unknown quiet teams. United Lions FC (former Div 3) is three wins ahead and will no doubt take top spot, despite having a very, very poor defence. FC Lasagne sits second, and is a win ahead of 4th (3rd is banned). The Blue Bakers look on par, but won’t have what it takes this season.  Marto66 has played good of lately, but again, it won’t be enough to hit second I think. Mulcantine’s B-team (Baby Mulcantine) will also fall short.

My Tip: United Lion will already promote, with FC Lasagne to follow. The Blue Bakers has an outside chance.

Teams to watch out for next season (4.1 – 4.12):

  • Harry’s Heroes
  • Beergod
  • Melbourne Ferrets
  • Anfield Legends FC
  • Tyneside United

Hardest Division 4 Groups (4.1 – 4.12):

  • 4.6
  • 4.4
  • 4.3  (B-Team Keepers)

Thank you everyone, and I hope this has been a good read. Part 2 is below (4.13 – 4.27)

Signing out, Herb.

He's Back With Part Two
Written 24-10-10  (For Part One See Archives)

Herb is back in the writing chair already, for all you fans out there. I would like to personally thank everybody who sent me feedback as it helps me do my job to make this better for all of youse. I will continue all “Promotion” reports on every group, and from there I will be able to figure out which groups are worth reporting on the most. Remember, more feedback the better. Please find the very short survey form at the bottom of this page.

Welcome back to TM Australia and welcome back to Herbs Division 4 “Promotion” Chances, this is Part 2.

Division 4 – Promotion (Part 2 - 4.13 – 4.27)

Division 4 is sometimes more interesting than “Higher” division teams may realise. But it can be frustrating, just like any division. Teams get banned, some teams seem to have infinite amounts of money, and you just can’t figure out why. You lose all the time, you re-build your squad, everything and anything can happen. Let’s take a look at the groups and teams whom have managed to overcome all of this, and whom are on track to enter Division 3.  This is Herb Elliot giving you an exclusive insight into Groups 4.13 to 4.27.  Enjoy.

4.13 – The Trend Continues…
…Quiet, it is a real shame.

Division 4 contains many quiet groups, and ones like this make it worse. Six teams are battling it out for second, but “if a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?” There is simply no sound in this group. This in turn, makes it not so interesting. There is however, a small rivalry in the group between Perth Penetrators and Caza Town. This is the small flame that burns in this group. One of which is a little more interesting, seeing that Perth sits in second place at the moment (Caza 7th). Caza is only 7 points behind with five matches left. A long shot indeed. Rabbits sit well in front and will hit Division 3 for sure, which again shows another certain trend amongst Div 4; many of these groups have one team which is a long way ahead of the team in 2nd. Their team is strong, and have only lost recently to Perth (0-1). Caza Town has the smallest shot at promotion, 7 points behind. Their main forward is currently suspended and they’re losing more then winning of late.

The other 5 teams (Perth Penetrators, Barcalona Canadiens FC, Alberts Army, Dog Park Rangers, and The Hells Pit Reapers) will fight for everything. Whoever has the easiest run home should snatch promotion.

My Tip: Rabbits have proven to be the best team of the lot and has easily broken away with only 2 losses this season. The Hell Pit Reapers have done amazing for their first season in Division 4 and is looking strong. Dog Park Rangers are also looking good. Alberts Army is looking the current weak link. They may have an amazing keeper, backed up with some older great players, but with no forward line to be seen they won’t make the cut. Barcalona is looking good, but currently have a few injuries. Perth Penetrators have had a strong run of late, and with a fairly easy run home, I am certain they will just snatch 2nd place. But any mistakes would earn THPR or DPR the spot.

4.14 – Déjà vu: Staring Saints Fury

We see another group, with a banned team in first place (Risa), who is currently 7 points ahead of second place. Life’s a B!tch sometimes. Once again there is six teams challenging for second… some of whom have been inactive for a few months (Mudgee Masters, Xtreme Lions, Smashhitstars). Smashhitstars sit in second, and haven’t been active for a month, which might not be long enough to be marked as inactive (8 weeks the current cut off). This is bad news for teams like Orzel Czarny FC, Saints Fury and Competeter for Ever; who are actually managing their teams. Interestingly, all of these teams have only won two of their last 5 games and have a 2 point difference (Less than a win). Even Smashhitstars have only won two of their last 5. Czarny has the most trouble here, with a few players out.

My Tip:  When Risa is deleted, and Smashhitstars marked as inactive, it will be a very interesting finish. Two spots are up for grabs, and sadly one team will miss out, but only by a small margin. With Orzel having a number of crucial players out, Saints Fury and Competeter look set to promote.

4.15 – The A-Team
Strong teams? Tick
Challenging? Tick
Active? Tick

Welcome to 4.15, one of the best, most active groups in Division 4 that you will ever find in Australia. Make promotion here, and you undoubtedly deserve your shot in Division 3. Nut so Dirty is the break away club again, sitting 12 points clear in first position. They will hit Div 3 after being in this current division for only three seasons. Lucky for the club, as plenty of players have been injured or suspended of late. Now we turn our focus onto the battle for 2nd place. That annoying 2nd spot, it seems to be the real challenge for a lot of clubs here in Division 4.

There was a point when six clubs fought for this spot (Tiprats FC, Western Bulldogs, Grace United, USQ FC, Knights Templar FC and Xavier Blues). Three of these clubs lost last week and have diminished their chances of promoting greatly (USQ, Knights, XB). Xavier Blues are out now, 12 points behind and 15 possible points left to earn. They won’t be promoting this time around. The Knights loss to Tiprats has put them 9 points behind, and they will fall short this season. They will be in the same group again for the 4th successive season in Season 22. USQ FC has played brilliantly all season for a team who was just promoted from Div 5, but they will also fall short of this challenge. With Grace United sitting 7 points behind, their side has a slim chance. Tiprats FC and Western Bulldogs will have to crumble if any of those teams are to have a shot. These are the two sides that are left in the promotion challenge in my opinion.

If things still aren’t interesting enough, these two teams faced each other today in what was a must win match for both. Both sides had won 4 of there last 5 and this could have been the deciding match on promotion, Tiprats being 1 point ahead of the dogs. The margin stays the same after the match ended in a 1-1 draw.  The battle continues...

We managed to catch up with Western Bulldogs manager, Rowdy, today for a chat on this year’s season before the big game against Tiprats.

Herb Elliot: Hi mate, this is Herb Elliot, welcome to TM Australia Western Bulldogs. Let me just say that 4.15 is just such a tough group, and you yourself have been here for awhile and here you are again, so close to promotion. What are your own thoughts upon promotion this season?

Rowdy (Bulldogs): Well Herb, I have to say this is, by far, one of the strongest groups in div 4.  Over the last few seasons every team seems to be developing equally, which causes headaches at this time of season when so many of us still have a chance at promotion.

The bulldogs seem to find themselves in this position every year so hopefully we will build the confidence in the team to take that next step.  Injuries have been very kind to us, if that run continues we have a very good chance of promotion.....and a little luck to go our way. There are some excited folks around the kennel at the moment, so we hope things work out in our favour!

Herb: What about that monster of a keeper? Surely he will boost your squad’s chances. For $190mil, do you think he was (has been) worth the price tag? What are your thoughts on him?

Rowdy: When we hit the transfer market at the start of the season, we were looking for a player to take us to division 3. The weakness was our defense so we welcomed Peter Dekelver to the squad.  Yes, a monster of a keeper and he has been in great form. Apart from 3 weeks on the sideline through injury, Peter has been a rock at the goal line and a hero to the fans. Worth 190 Million? We will have to wait till the end of the season to answer that one Herb.

Herb: He’s a skilled keeper, and Div 3 will be a welcoming challenge to him. How do you think the rest of the team will handle it, if promotion is to happen?

Rowdy: I think we have few that will handle promotion well, Garry, Hodge, Lampard, Honzak and Didak will do well. The rest will have to earn their spot, but I don’t want to talk div 3 too much till we get there.

Herb: One last minute of your time mate, I have noticed that promotion has basically fallen to yourself and Tiprats. Tiprats look to have an easier run home. I think it will fall down to your match against him today on who wins promotion, they beat you 3-2 last time, in the very last minute. This time you have an injury also; will this affect your team much? Do you think you can win it?

Rowdy: If we want to stay in the hunt for promotion we simply have to win. Hodge unfortunately will sit this one out. Tiprats are a very good side and I know how good it is be in div 3, so let’s hope the team can stop their attack this time and come home with the points. It’s been good talking to you Herb.

My Tip: Nut so Dirty has already gained promotion, with Tiprats FC and Western Bulldogs the only ones left with a real shot. So who will it be? Tiprats sit with 1 point in there favour and a slightly easier run home then the dogs. Early in the season Tiprats beat the dogs 3-2 winning the game in the 89th minute! Tiprats had a full squad while The Bulldogs were one man down. The match ended in a 1-1 draw.  I thought that whoever win the game would win promotion, after the draw, I simply have no idea.  Feels a bit like the AFL Grand Final (Game 1)...

4.16 – A Whole Different Story
…not really

The only managers to comment this season, one is in first place, the other in 18th spot. Toowoomba Pirates look set to finally promote this year, 22 points ahead of 3rd place. Darbin will be in 4.16 for the 9th time in a row next season. They have finished 3rd twice, just missing out, but have since finished 10th and now 18th. Along with Toowoomba Pirates, Boteti (Former Div.3) is set to promote as well being 10 points ahead of 3rd. Toowoomba with an average squad age of 31 is not a good sign for the team.

4.17 – The No Names
Quiet…..

4.18 – That Group With Essendon Bombers

Although quiet with press announcements EB is one of the most noticed Division.4 teams around. The Heavy Drinkers and Essendon Bombers will both be promoting this season. 9 points ahead of Big Legged Wonders, I can’t see them not promoting. The unknown Heavy Drinkers have no club nickname, manager or city, and appear to be drinking too much. Essendon Bombers is the team to be. Great youth coming through, a forward that would make any Division 4 or 3 team envy over, two great young defenders and a keeper whose not out dated just yet. I’m punting this team to go all out in Division 3 next season. Shepparton Swans made Division 3 in S20, and was relegated straight away. Back here in Division 4 they will remain again, making next season their 8th here. The Big Legged Wonders have gone from Division 4 to 3 twice now, and will stay here for the 3rd season in a row.

I caught up with Essendon Bombers manager, Dimitar Berbatov, to talk with the great man who manages the players both on and off the field.

Herb Elliot: Welcome to TM Australia Essendon Bombers, this is my first interview, and what a great way to kick things off; by talking to one of the strongest Division 4 teams. First of all, has it been a tough challenge over in 4.18? What are your thoughts on the group as a whole?

Dimitar Berbatov: Why thank you Herb, it’s a pleasure to be here. I have to say though, saying I am one of the best teams in div 4 is a bit rich. There are lots of teams better then us around.

Well unfortunately, 4.18 is dead quiet. Apart from FC Ethiopia, I have not seen a post from any other team in any forum. I would be expecting at the end of the season about 5-8 inactives to be marked. To be honest, this season has been quite easy. There have only really been 3 teams in the running for promotion. And even now, 3rd place is dropping off. I am pleased with our team, as we have only conceded 18 goals all season (the lowest in the league). Especially since we only play three defenders.

Herb: You have recently picked up a few new defenders, how are they turning out so far? With Hembrechts up front, they must really be proving to boost your team as a whole now?

DB: I’ve been lucky that Frankie (my chief YA scout), has found lots of talent for me to sell. I am extremely happy with my new purchases. Since joining our team, Michailov is averaging 7.33, with a goal and two assists. While Wilson is averaging 7.5, with two goals and the one assist. They will be absolute superstars, especially considering Michailov has a whole season of bloom left.

Hembrechts is a machine. Averaging 6.04, and averaging pretty much a goal per game, he is an outstanding player. And just between you and me, he has better skills then some A-League strikers ;)

Clearly they boost the team. That’s why I’m promoting (*Dimitar laughs out loud).

Herb: Just between you and TM Australia, everyone will know now (*more laughter), so there's no doubt that these players have been a terrific addition to your side. Division 3 will most certainly be the test for these players. How do you plan to tackle Division 3?

DB: Those players are division 2 quality, without a doubt. I have spent many a season down here in 4.18, waiting for my moment to pounce; to not only promote, but promote again, or at the very least, finish in the top half. And BAM! Now is the opportunity. The thing I am most worried about is our defensive midfield. We have a couple of stars in the academy, but I don’t feel they are of division 3 quality. I have a sale lined up soon, and all proceeds will not be going to charity, they will be going to signing new DM's.

My plan for division 3: Win. Not only win, but concede as least goals as possible. We have conceded the least in our group at the moment, and I want the boys to continue their defensive form into next season. Goals will come, namely from Hembrechts.

Herb: Well thank you for your time, TM Australia and I wish you the best of luck in Division 3. Congratulations as well, you will know what I mean when you read the article. Any last thoughts mate?

DB: No worries herb. Hmm I look forward to reading the article.

My final thoughts: “If you're lounging around in your underwear and see a mosquito, wait until it flies off your crotch before you swat it.”  Oh...you meant about soccer?

Umm well, *cough*, I would like to publicly thank Beergod for his humorous posts in the TM forums about his exploits with the amber fluid. I think Alcoholics Utd might have some competition.

My Tip: Not much of a tip here, The Heavy Drinkers and Essendon Bombers have promotion all but sealed now.

4.19 – More Banned Teams for Promotion

The problem with Division 4 groups is that some may have no press announcements but still have active teams, so I apologise if there’s lack of info for your group because of this.

Rush32 looks set to promote, even with three injuries at the moment. Metro FC is in 2nd but banned, so when they are deleted, it will leave room open for Bora Juniors B-Team. With 20 year old, Mile Sampi (47,500ASI), turning out to be a great keeper for the club after 4 years. Jager Bombers FC continues their Division 4 campaign after jumping to Div 3 in season 19, but not being able to hold their spot. Since then they have finished 7th, and are currently 8th. The young side is full of hope for the future with some very nice youth to start appearing in the coming seasons.

My Tip: Rush 32 will promote along side Bora Juniors B-Team.

4.20 – More of the Same

First placed Brighton United the only real active team along side ‘The Snakes’ B-Team. Brighton is currently 6 points ahead of Super Den, with a very nice looking team for Division 3 next season. 2nd place looks to be between Super Den and 3rd placed Dean’s Duds who are both active. Dean’s Duds might be duds for bouncing back and forth between Div 3 and 4 a lot but their team is finally coming about after their youths gaining experience over many seasons. For a club that’s been around for 10 seasons, I think it’s time for them to stay in Division 3. Super Den has won three of their last 5, one of which was against Dean’s Duds. They have won four of their last 5 though.

My Tip: Brighton United to promote with Dean’s Duds.

4.21 – The No Names

Quiet…..Except Vectis Vikings, unfortunately not looking good at promotion.

4.22 – So many teams…
….that I have never heard of.

There is so many teams in Division 4 (486 – To be exact) that are just not active in the community or with posting anything. I can’t understand how so many teams can enjoy the game with no interaction between other teams.

Celtic FC was the only one to publish announcements, but funny enough is banned now.

4.23 – I think its time for dinner…
…Cause nothing here is changing

Cronulla Sharks seem to be fairly active, but is 10 points out of promotion. Division 4 they will stay.

4.24 – I think its time to cut 27 groups back to 13…
….Then we can all have active, challenging groups and be happy

FC Richmond are in first place *beep* they’re also banned.

2nd is a battle between Quirindi Tigers FC, Maverick Utd, Macabi Bondi, Calrton Blues FC, lynx101 and Mullsy FC. I know right, your all thinking, who are these guys?? All these teams are actually half ok and challenging each other for promotion. The only problem is there teams are so close it’s virtually impossible to tell whose going to make it. Lnyx101 has a very nice team in the making, however there run has started too late. Tigers have won there last three and looking fairly safe, but it could be anyone’s game here.

4.25 – Are these even teams?

Yeah… this is going to send Herb nuts soon.

4.26 – 2nd Last Group, Staring FC Goodna Blaze
…. Psst he wants to quit.

4.27 – More wasting space

TM, seriously, just cut the groups back. Thanks.

*Herb Elliot’s Group of the Year Award

This will be a season Award also to one group in Division 4. This season I’ve awarded it to 4.15, not only is it a tough group to play in and promote from, but it’s very active. Nut so Dirty, Tiprats FC, Western Bulldogs, Grace United, USQ FC, Knights Templar FC, Xavier Blues, Blaizers, All Mighty Royal Ospreys and Forrestfield United.
